Steel and Timber Structures Specialist Team

1. Introduction to the Expert Team

With over 65 years of formation and development, the Steel-Timber Construction Engineering Group is one of the oldest and most established groups at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, pioneering in training, research, and application of modern technology in the field of structural engineering.

Under the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, the Group's mission is to train generations of civil engineers, conduct scientific research, and transfer technology. The Group's main areas of expertise include:

  • Steel structures and traditional steel-concrete composite structures.
  • Modern metal structures: Currently, the Group is focusing on expanding its in-depth research into new subjects such as aluminum alloy structures and thin-walled steel structures.
  • Timber Structures: Although there has been a history of compiling curricula and teaching in this field, training has been temporarily suspended due to the long-term decline in the proportion of timber structures in Vietnam. However, given the strong development trend of new wood materials (such as modified wood, artificial wood, laminate wood, etc.), the expert group is directing research and restarting teaching to meet the practical needs of the country in the new phase.

The strength of the Steel-Timber Construction Engineering Group is built on a foundation of highly experienced and qualified faculty, including 20 full-time lecturers and 6 visiting lecturers. With 2 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 9 PhDs, and 10 Master's degree holders, this is a strong and reputable team in training and scientific research, always ready to support the development of the Vietnamese construction industry in the new era.

2. History of Formation

The history of the Professional Group's development is closely linked to the history of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, and can be summarized through the following main stages:

  • October 1959:The Department of Steel, the predecessor of the Specialized Group, was established in room 204, building D, Hanoi University of Technology. Professor Do Quoc Sam was the head of the department, along with two lecturers, Professor Doan Dinh Kien and Professor Le Duc Thang.
  • In 1963:The Department of Steel was merged with the Department of Concrete and Structural Mechanics to form the Department of Structural Engineering.
  • 1966:The University of Civil Engineering was established with four faculties from the Polytechnic University. The university's Civil Engineering department included the Steel and Concrete group.
  • In 1968:The Department of Civil Engineering was split into two independent units: the Department of Steel-Timber Engineering and the Department of Reinforced Concrete Engineering.
  • From 1983 to August 2025: The Department of Steel and Timber Structures, located at 55 Giai Phong Street, Hanoi, continues to develop and affirm its position as one of the leading units in the field of structural engineering in Vietnam.
  • From August 2025 to present:The Department of Steel and Timber Structures was transformed into the Steel and Timber Structures Specialized Group, under the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.
